Gerda Henkel Foundation: General Research Grants - Projects

The Gerda Henkel Foundation offers general research grants for projects in the historical humanities, supporting topics related to current issues in a historical context. Funding covers personnel, travel, and materials costs, with a focus on research projects in fields like archaeology, history of art, and historical Islamic studies. Applicants must actively participate in the research and cannot receive both a salary and a scholarship. The grants aim to promote cultural heritage preservation and support young scholars, particularly in crisis regions.

Research projects that explore current issues in a larger historical context or consciously focus on topics of relevance to the present or the future receive support from programmes of a limited duration such as the the special programme “Forced Migration”, or the “Democracy” and “Lost Cities” funding programmes. As part of the Lisa Maskell Fellowship programme, the Foundation supports young scholars in the humanities in Africa. With its “Patrimonies” funding initiative, it promotes the preservation of the cultural heritage, specifically in regions experiencing crisis.
Type and scope of the funding
The grants for research projects involve, depending on the type of project, the assumption of costs for personnel, travel, materials and/or other costs.
Applicants must be actively involved in the research work underpinning the project. Project staff on research projects may only be financed by PhD or research grants. A fundamental prerequisite for a grant is that project staff conduct their own research, which is published under their name. The simultaneous receipt of salary or retirement pension and a research scholarship is not possible.

• Support for Student assistant
• Travel aid
• Material aidWhat Rules Apply for Research Scholarships:
• Only full-time scholarships are available (max. 5 hrs. a week in other employment).

A scholarship cannot be granted if the person is also receiving a salary or drawing a pension.Project participants must perform research work themselves that is then published under their own name.Support can be provided for a period of min. one month and max. 24 months.
