Genesis Fund

Geographic Scope: Richmond, Virginia area and surrounding communities

Focus Areas: The Genesis Fund supports a wide variety of communal projects addressing compelling community needs. Examples include:

  • Safety and security projects

  • Community studies and research

  • Education and cultural programs

  • Senior services

  • Youth programs

  • Jewish arts and culture

  • Holocaust education and memorialization

  • Early childhood education
  • Eligible Applicants: Jewish agencies, synagogues, and nonprofit organizations serving the Richmond Jewish community

    Background: Established in honor of Neil November (OBM), the Genesis Fund is the Foundation's unrestricted pool providing support for research, development, and special projects. Since 2005, over $500,000 in Genesis Fund grants have been awarded to dozens of community projects.

    Notable Recent Awards:

  • $40,000 grant to Weinstein JCC for "Celebrating Jewish Richmond: 1700's to the Present" (2020)

  • Multiple Safety and Security grants (2016-2017)

  • Support for PJ Library program, Operation Promise, Maccabi Games, and many other initiatives

    Application Process

    • Applications are forwarded to eligible community partners during the grant cycle
    • Proposals are reviewed by the RJF Grants Committee
    • Grant awards are announced during the spring
    • The competitive process involves committee review and RJF Board approval
