  • Members of affinity journalism associations (AAJA, IJA, Military Veterans in Journalism, NABJ, NAHJ, NLGJA, SAJA, The Uproot Project, Trans Journalists Association) receive waived entry fees

  • Non-members whose professional work meets SEJ membership eligibility may apply with $40 fee

  • Background: FEJ is underwritten by nonprofit Rewiring America and other foundation and individual donors. Past grant rounds have supported journalists covering topics including fish industry environmental impact, rare earth mining, water scarcity, hydroelectric development, infectious disease ecology, wind energy, species endangerment, carbon markets, and pesticide activism.

    1. Review the FEJ Proposal Guidelines before submitting
    2. Complete the online application portal with the following required materials:
    - Narrative proposal describing the story project
    - Media dissemination plan showing where the work will be published/distributed
    - Qualifications of the journalist/team
    - Letter of support from editor(s)
    - Detailed project budget
    3. Pay entry fee (if applicable):
    - FREE for SEJ members
    - FREE for members of AAJA, IJA, Military Veterans in Journalism, NABJ, NAHJ, NLGJA, SAJA, The Uproot Project, Trans Journalists Association
    - $40 for non-members whose professional work meets SEJ membership eligibility
