The Frederick George Pohland Medal, awarded by the AEESP Foundation, recognizes outstanding contributions in environmental engineering and science. Nominations are open only to AEESP and AAEES members, with specific submission guidelines including a cover letter, CV, and letters of recommendation. This prestigious award honors the legacy of Dr. Frederick G. Pohland, known for his significant advancements in anaerobic processes and dedication to the field.

Nominations must be made by members of AEESP and/or AAEES. Past nominations will be carried over and considered for three years and can be modified during this period. Refer to the nomination package for the required submission requirements. Nomination packages that are incomplete or exceed page length maximums will not be reviewed.
Dr. Frederick G. Pohland (1931-2004) was Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Professor and Edward R. Weidlein Chair of Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Fred's research led to fundamental advances in anaerobic processes. He received numerous honors and awards and was the author of more than 150 technical and scientific publications. Dr. Pohland was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993 for advancing the theory of anaerobic treatment processes and applications to solid waste management. Committed to applying research to practice and disseminating vital information, Dr. Pohland founded and chaired International Water Association (IWA) Specialist Committees to bring together practitioners, researchers and educators. Fred Pohland was a valued colleague and very dedicated to advancement of the profession of environmental engineering.

Eligibility

Only members of AEESP and/or the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) are eligible to receive this award. An individual may receive the award only once.Requirements for nominators and letter writers:One nomination per cycle per award for a given category may be submitted by a single nominator.There is no limit on the number of nomination packages to which an individual letter writer may contribute.If a single individual is serving as a nominator or letter writer for more than one nominee during a single cycle, they will be contacted to provide a ranking of their contributions before the committee's review.Complete nomination package includes:Cover letter (one-page max.) from the nominator. The letter should contain a short citation, which summarizes the essence of the individual's contribution. The citation is limited to 150 characters including punctuation and spacing.Brief curriculum vitae (4-page maximum) for the nominee.At least two, but not more than five, additional letters of recommendation. Each letter should be limited to no more than two pages with a minimum of 11-point font size of Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial.
