Forecasting Glaucoma Disease Progression with Artificial Intelligence Grant

The Glaucoma Foundation issued a Request for Applications (RFA) for research addressing critical gaps in glaucoma care using artificial intelligence strategies.

Focus: Forecasting glaucoma disease progression and predicting whether patients will require incisional surgery or be blinded by glaucoma.

Award Amount: Up to $250,000 USD over a two-year period. No indirect funds are allowed.

Key Requirements:

• Research team must be willing to share the algorithm freely (without sharing individual-level patient data)
• Applications must forecast outcomes rather than provide alternative monitoring strategies
• Preference given to applications that could lead to a randomized clinical trial of AI-guided versus usual care in the management of glaucoma
• Focus on applications that forecast an outcome and ultimately impact patient care

• No current way to forecast glaucoma disease progression

• Arbitrary decisions about target IOP based only on clinical consideration of patient age, baseline damage, and baseline IOP
