    • Organization Type: 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organizations only
    • Primary Focus: Nonprofits primarily focused on food insecurity
    • Cannot be: Private foundations
    • Geographic Requirement: Must serve Northwest Philadelphia in specified zip codes
    • Dual Focus Required: Must demonstrate BOTH direct service AND systems change efforts
    • Submission Limit: One LOI per organization per calendar year
    • Required Documentation: Photocopy of most recent IRS determination letter

    Mission & Focus

    Foundation for Health Equity provides direct support to organizations fulfilling immediate, individual needs (e.g., programs that feed hungry families) as well as addressing historical, systemic inequities (e.g., work to end food deserts). Goal is to improve systems that have historically made it difficult for people to gain and maintain health.

    What Foundation Does NOT Fund

    • Institutions which discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religion/non-religion
    • Grants to individuals
    • Support of promotion of specific religions
    • Loans, endowment, and debt reduction
    • Capital campaigns

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Step One: Nonprofit creates an account on the online platform and submits Letter of Intent (LOI) prior to cycle deadline (by July 1, 5pm)

    Step Two: Foundation for Health Equity reviews LOIs

    Step Three: Organizations that meet all requirements will be contacted for an interview and site visit. Organizations that do not meet requirements will receive decline letters.

    Step Four: Grants Committee reviews applications and awards are determined

    Timeline: Applicants will be contacted by late September

    Required Materials

    • Letter of Intent (LOI) submitted through online portal
    • Photocopy of organization's most recent IRS determination letter (501(c)(3) verification)
    • Systems change documentation/information (see Systems Change Info)
