Overview

Our Mission To make our collection accessibleTo advance understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare’s writings and the culture of the early modern worldTo preserve and enhance our collection Folger Long Term Fellowships The Folger Institute offers five, long-term fellowships at $70,000 for the academic year (approximately $7,777 per month, for a standard period of 9 months). These fellowships are designed to support full-time scholarly work on significant research projects that draw on the strengths of the Folger’s collections and programs. Please note, for the next fellowship year, long-term fellows will have the option to take up to 3 months of their 9-month fellowship virtually. This virtual time may be taken at any point in the fellowship and does not have to be taken concurrently. Applicants may propose any research schedule that best fits their project’s needs. The Folger Institute is committed to supporting research with our collections from across fields of study in the early modern humanities and their afterlives, especially projects that point to richer and more inclusive histories of the early modern world. For scholars, the Folger Institute offers long-term (an academic year) and short-term (up to three months) research fellowships. Both opportunities are designed for scholarly research that would greatly benefit from the Folger’s extensive printed book and manuscript collections and/or digital resources. While the Folger is certainly best known for our materials related to Shakespeare and his time, our collection of printed books and manuscripts also covers the literary, cultural, political, religious, and social history of Britain and Europe from the 15th though 18th centuries, with a strong emphasis on the 16th and 17th centuries.
