Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grants

Overview: The Emerging Artists Program (EAP) is a project grant program that provides financial support to developing or established professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists.

Program Focus: Pivotal projects may happen at different stages of a career, therefore Emerging Artists Grants are not restricted to unestablished artists.

Geographic Scope: Applicants must have resided in Chatham, Durham, Granville, Orange, or Person Counties (North Carolina) for at least one year immediately prior to the application deadline.

Eligibility:

  • Individuals only (not ensembles or groups)

  • Artists practicing any art form are eligible

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Cannot be currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program in their art form at the time of application deadline

  • Recipients of the previous year's grant may not apply
  • Definition of Emerging Artist: An artist that has mastered the basic techniques in their art form and who is attempting to launch a professional career in the arts, or an artist taking their established career in a new direction. No particular degree or type of education is required.

    Project Timeline: Projects must be completed by December 31 of the funding year.

    Eligible Project Types:

  • Promotion/Presentation: producing demonstration materials (CD, DVD, portfolio, editorial assistance, etc.)

  • Travel: to workshops, auditions, retreats, seminars, or research intrinsic to the art form

  • Services: rental of equipment or facilities for presentation or creation of new work

  • Supplies: purchase of supplies, materials or equipment necessary for completion or production of new work

  • Training: advanced workshops, master classes or coaching to enhance abilities (does not support degree programs)
  • Does Not Fund: Work towards a degree or certificate program

    Selection Criteria:

  • Overall excellence of the applicant's artwork and demonstration of exceptional talent

  • Applicant's serious professional commitment to their art form

  • Contribution of the proposed project to the artist's professional development

  • Feasibility of the proposed project

  • Timeline feasibility
  • Funding Sources: North Carolina Arts Council (division of Department of Natural & Cultural Resources), The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the Anika James Foundation, the Orange County Arts Commission, the Granville Education Foundation, the Person County Arts Council, the Chatham Arts Council, The Linda A. Ironside Fund for the Arts of the Triangle Community Foundation, Durham Arts Council Annual Arts Fund, the Ella Fountain Pratt Fund, the Ruth Carver Fund, the Wainwright Fund for New Works, and private & corporate donations.

    Requirements After Award: Recipients must submit both a financial and narrative final report. Future awards are contingent upon submission of final report.

  • Applications are only accepted online

  • Different applications for each art form; select the application appropriate for your work

  • If your work uses multiple media, pick the panel whose expertise is the best fit for your project
  • Required Materials:

  • Grant application (online form)

  • Support materials as specified in application

  • Project narrative clearly defining the relationship of your project to your career development
  • Application Assistance:

  • Free grant workshops offered by Durham Arts Council and partner counties

  • Sessions last 60-90 minutes

  • RSVP appreciated but not required

  • Applicants may attend any session regardless of county residence
  • Review Process:

  • Applications reviewed by local professional artists in each art form

  • Artist comments forwarded to EAP Committee

  • EAP Committee reviews applications, recommendations, and makes final award decisions
  • Reporting Requirements:

  • Both financial and narrative report required from recipients

  • Report form sent to award recipients

  • Submission required for future award eligibility
