Background: The Edward W. Cooch, Jr. Environmental Scholarship fund was established in 2011 to honor the late Edward W. Cooch, Jr. (1920-2010), an avid environmentalist with a deep passion for the natural lands and water resources of Delaware. Ned was one of the founders of the Christina Conservancy in 1982 and a driving force behind the creation of the Christina River Watershed Cleanup in 1992, which has removed thousands of tons of trash and debris from the watershed. The scholarship is sponsored by the Christina Conservancy and its affiliate, the Christina River Watershed Cleanup Committee.

Focus Areas: Environmental studies, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, landscape horticulture and design, wildlife biology, meteorology, geosciences, and related environmental fields

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be applying to a properly accredited junior college, college, or university for the fall semester
  • Must be a Delaware resident
  • Must be a senior in a Delaware high school OR returning veteran of the U.S. armed services
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Must major in an environmental field of study
  • Must demonstrate interest in the environment through activities such as:
  • - Participate in cleanups - Engage in school Eco-club projects - Take environmental classes - Community service related to environment

Selection Criteria

  • Recipient will have a strong interest in the natural environment and water resources
  • Must have demonstrated this interest through engagement in the community
  • Must clearly communicate academic and career goals as they relate to natural environment and water resources
  • GPA of 3.0 or greater required
  • Scholarship Committee does not discriminate by age, race, color, national origin, disability, creed, or gender
  • Family members of the Scholarship Committee are not eligible
  • The decision of the Committee is final
  • Recipients agree to release of name and photo for publicity purposes

    Selection Process

    • Applications reviewed by the Christina Conservancy Scholarship Committee
    • Committee selects one recipient annually
    • Awards announced in June each year
    • Recipients are invited to an awards ceremony hosted by the Cooch family at the historic Cooch residence at Cooch's Bridge, Newark, Delaware
