Edward T. Cone Fellowship Grant

The Edward T. Cone Fellowship, awarded by the Society for American Music, supports scholars researching American concert music, honoring Edward T. Cone's influential contributions as a composer and musicologist. The fellowship, open to researchers at any career stage, offers a maximum award of $2,000 for expenses related to travel, books, and media resources. This initiative fosters scholarly engagement with American music history, creation, and analysis, enhancing appreciation for diverse musical cultures.

holding collegial annual conferences that feature scholarly presentations, musical performances, and opportunities for social interaction and professional development of its members;disseminating high-quality research and thoughtful articles and reviews through the peer reviewed Journal and the online Bulletin;offering financial support for research at libraries, archives, and other venues in the United States and abroadpresenting annual awards that recognize outstanding scholarship, dedicated service to the Society, lifetime professional achievement, and significant contributions to the American musical culture;partnering with other local and national organizations to sponsor outreach initiatives designed to engage the general public with innovative programming;furnishing creative curriculum support for K–12 and university educators interested in integrating American music into their classrooms;advocating for the sustained support of humanities research, music librarianship, and musical composition, as well as greater access to the resources of American music; andserving as a resource for media outlets and the general public.
The Edward T. Cone Fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers whose research interest is focused on the history, creation, and analysis of American concert music, ranging from solo or chamber music to symphonic works.
The maximum award is $2,000.

Eligibility

The Fellowship may support research expenses, including but not limited to travel expenses, books, and media resources.
You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. An applicant must be a member in good standing of the Society.

Ineligibility

Projects that have already received SAM fellowship support (Block, Graziano, McCulloh, McLucas, Thomson, Tick) are not eligible to receive the Cone Fellowship.
