Overview: Education and training are key to Smile Train's sustainable model. Funding ensures that medical teams in even the most low-resource settings have access to first-rate educational opportunities, helping improve the proficiency, safety, and quality of care they provide.

Geographic Scope: Low- and middle-income countries with the highest incidence of clefts

Eligibility: Partner healthcare organizations and medical teams

Funding Principles - What Smile Train Does:

• Focus exclusively on programs related to cleft lips and palates
• Focus on low- and middle-income countries with the highest incidence of clefts
• Support programs that provide free treatment for patients in need
• Support cleft team members and hospitals that need financial assistance
• Leverage support by cost-sharing with partners
• Foster self-sufficiency in partners
• Closely monitor and manage all programs and partners
• Require all partners to adhere to the highest standards of safety and quality

What Smile Train Does NOT Fund:

• Treatment for children whose families can afford it
• Surgeries that other organizations will subsidize (government, insurance, charities, etc.)
• Organizations that do not provide safe and high-quality treatment
