Dr. Frank Groner Administrative Fellowship Program

Funder: Baptist Memorial Health Care

Purpose: An immersive, one-year training opportunity where fellows learn and work with executive-level leadership to develop the next generation of health care leaders. Upon completion, graduates will have gained a broad and in-depth understanding of operating a comprehensive health care system with leadership skills needed to transition into administrative health system leadership roles.

Program Duration: One year, begins in June and completed in May of the following year

Geographic Scope: Three-state region including Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi (24 hospitals across region)

Program Overview:
Fellows experience broad exposure to every aspect of a faith-based integrated comprehensive regional health care system:

  • Inpatient care and outpatient services

  • Medical clinics with over 900 providers (Baptist Medical Group)

  • Telehealth operations

  • Baptist outpatient surgery and imaging centers

  • Home care and hospice

  • Emergency services
  • Program Structure - Three Phases:

      Phase 1: Corporate Learning

      Fellows spend time in corporate offices learning about overall system management with emphasis on:
    • System support services
    • Strategic planning
    • Operational management
    • Managed care
    • Finance
    • Human resources
    • Quality
    • Legal
    • Marketing
    • Government relations
    • Clinical service lines (cardiology, neurology, oncology, pediatrics, etc.)

      Phase 2: Operating Entities

      Fellows gain frontline access to:
    • All 24 hospitals in the system
    • Baptist Medical Group clinic operations
    • Outpatient surgery and imaging centers
    • Home care services
    • Hospice operations
    • Emergency services
    • Telemedicine services

    Phase 3: Leadership Development

    Fellows apply knowledge and develop management skills by supporting and leading innovation teams through active projects for the health system

    Mentorship:
    Fellows work directly with two preceptors throughout the 12-month fellowship:

  • Chief Executive Officer: Jason Little

  • Chief Strategy Officer: Zach Chandler
  • Additional mentorship provided by Baptist executive leaders including Senior Leadership Team members, hospital and medical group CEOs, and corporate system services leaders.

    Legacy Program: Current fellows build on legacies of previous Dr. Frank Groner fellows who have gone on to remarkable careers in health care and hospital administration at prestigious systems throughout the U.S. and world.

    Location: Memphis, Tennessee - described as offering "big city life, small town feel" with unique blend of culture, history, nightlife, arts, nature, and refreshingly low cost of living.
