Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo Memorial Scholarship

Overview: The Caccomo Memorial Scholarship honors Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo, an immigrant from Rome who became a physician, orthopedic surgeon, and Army Reservist Colonel in the Special Forces. The scholarship is provided through his Family Foundation.

Award: Two (2) scholarships of $12,000 awarded annually

Geographic Scope: United States

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a United States veteran or member of the National Guard or Reserves

  • Must be a United States citizen

  • Must demonstrate financial need

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

  • Must agree to authorize AMVETS to publicize scholarship award if selected

  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment to an eligible program

  • Must not be in default on a federal student loan

  • Must not be convicted under state or federal law of sale or possession of illegal drugs

    • Supporting Documents Required:

  • Copy of honorable discharge or letter from commanding officer certifying current Guard/Reserve status

  • Official college transcripts for all courses attempted and degrees/certificates awarded

  • High school transcript if post-secondary credits are less than 12 credit hours and high school diploma awarded within past five years

  • Transcripts must be on 4.0-grade scale or translated to 4.0 scale

  • Complete and signed copy of applicant's 1040 tax form (to verify financial need)

  • If applicant's name appears on another's 1040 tax form, that must also be enclosed

  • Copy of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Acceptance letter or letter of current student status from accredited program

  • Proof of expenses (copy of expenses from school or program publication)

  • Resume detailing military duty and awards, volunteer activities, community services, and jobs held during past four years
