Overview

Destination Humboldt Initiative

Purpose: Attracting the best and brightest clinicians and addressing the urgent need for better access to care. Tackling the physician shortage through philanthropy.

Geographic Scope: Humboldt County, California (Eel River Valley and surrounding communities)

Program Overview: Groundbreaking initiative begun in Humboldt and being duplicated in other Providence ministries. The program utilizes philanthropy funds for physician recruitment and retention.

Focus Areas:

  • Physician Recruitment, Retention and Clinician Wellbeing

  • Bringing more doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff to the region

  • Honoring and retaining healthcare providers who have dedicated their careers to the North Coast
  • Support Areas: The initiative will focus resources on physician recruitment and retention through incentives such as:

  • Loan repayment assistance

  • Aid with relocation costs

  • Leadership development

  • Wellness support

  • Family establishment in the community

  • Additional incentives as needed
  • Incentive Structure: Incentives will be given in exchange for multi-year commitments to practicing in the region.

    Current Funding Priorities - Integrated Surgical Suite Needs:
    1. Mazor Intraoperative Robot - Goal: $500,000
    - Automated robotic arm that holds key surgical instrumentation in place for the surgeon
    - Robotic guidance helps surgeons execute custom surgical plans with exceptional precision through micro incisions

    2. S8 Stealth Image-Guided System - Goal: $150,000
    - Intuitive StealthStation™ S8 system
    - Enables clear visualization and surgical navigation of every segment in the spine

    3. O-Arm Intraoperative CT Platform - Goal: $600,000
    - O-arm Surgical Imaging System
    - Provides real-time, intra-operative imaging of patient's anatomy
    - High quality images with large field-of-view in both two and three dimensions

    Early Success Impact: Since April of 2023, the community has generously responded to this pilot program by donating more than $1.3 million toward Destination Humboldt. This has resulted in:

  • Successful recruitment of more than a dozen new providers

  • Key role in retaining several current providers

  • Funding of needed equipment to expand services

  • Potential to serve as many as 9,000 members of the community with primary care provider access

  • Far-reaching benefits felt by patients' families, communities, and local health systems operations
