Program Description

DEED grants support public power research and development through project grants that fund innovative ventures designed to improve efficiency, reduce costs, support adoption of new technologies, launch new products and services, and institute best practices to better serve public power customers.

  • Applicants: Grant and scholarship applications are open to DEED member organizations
  • Eligible Organizations:
  • - All public power utilities - Joint action agencies - State and regional associations - Federal service contractors - That are members of the American Public Power Association
  • Membership Requirement: All public power utilities, joint action agencies, state and regional associations, and federal service contractors that are members of APPA are eligible to join DEED

    Application Timeline

  • Deadlines: February 15 and August 15 (two deadlines per year)
  • Application Opens: At least two months before each deadline
  • Review Process: 12-member DEED board meets in April/May and November/December to vote on applications
  • Notification: Applicants are notified of the board's decision by email within ten business days of the board meeting
  • Total Timeline: Usually takes two to three months from the application deadline

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Check Membership Status: Ensure your organization is a DEED member. APPA members can join DEED; review membership benefits at the DEED member benefits page.

2. Review Project Eligibility: Your project must fit one of these categories:
- Pilot projects
- New technology demonstrations
- Early commercialization projects
- Development of best practices

3. Prepare Application Materials: Details on required materials are found in the full grants application guide ("Learn more about grants for utilities and how to apply")

4. Submit Online Application:
- Application portal opens at least two months before the deadline
- Submit by February 15 or August 15

5. Board Review: The 12-member DEED board reviews applications at meetings in April/May (for Feb 15 deadline) or November/December (for Aug 15 deadline)

6. Receive Decision: You will be notified by email within ten business days of the board meeting
