Community Chest Grant Program

Funder: The Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain

Geographic Scope: New Britain and Berlin, Connecticut, USA

History: Founded in 1919; also known historically as United Way of New Britain and Berlin

Areas of Interest and Priorities (Updated May 2025)

The Community Chest supports programs in the health and human service area and will consider requests for:

  • Program grants

  • General operating support

  • Seed grants for new programs
  • Current Priorities (due to challenging economic climate and federal funding cuts):

  • Mental Health

  • Food

  • Housing/Shelter

  • General Health
  • Organizations serving children in regard to the priority areas above will receive additional consideration.

    What We Do NOT Fund

    • Sectarian or religious activities
    • Political or lobbying activities
    • Capital campaigns
    • Deficits
    • Direct support of individuals
    • Annual or endowment campaigns
    • Camperships or scholarships for academic and/or enrichment programs
    • Public/independent schools
    • Generally, requests for capital equipment are not funded (but may be considered on a case-by-case basis)

    Eligibility

    • 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organizations or qualified entities eligible to receive grants from community foundations under IRS Code
    • Grassroots groups may be considered if they have a governing body and a fiscal agent with appropriate tax status
    • Funding hiatus requirement: Organizations are required to take a one-year hiatus following three years of consecutive funding

    Proposals will be evaluated with respect to:

  • Available funding

  • Potential benefit of the project to the community

    The Community Chest Board meets twice per year to review proposals.

    How to Apply

    #### Step 1: Access the Online Portal

  • All grant applications must be submitted through the Online Grant Portal

  • You will need to create a profile to apply

  • If you have received a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain since moving to the new system, you can use the same account
  • #### Step 2: Application Deadlines
    Submit applications by:

  • April 15 (for June Board meeting)

  • October 15 (for December Board meeting)
  • #### Step 3: Required Materials
    Application materials must be submitted through the Online Grant Portal. If your organization cannot use the online system, contact Candice Tabone to arrange an alternative submission method.

    #### Step 4: For Grantees

  • For grants awarded 2024 or after: Interim and final reports are submitted through the Online Grant Portal

  • For grants awarded before 2024: Use the provided Interim Report Form and Program and Operating Final Report Form
