Overview

Comer Education Grant Since its inception in 1946, The Comer Foundation has distributed $36 million ($110 million in 2024 dollars) towards scholarships, educational, and other charitable purposes in the State of Alabama. The Comer Foundation is a private foundation based on the Comer family’s tradition of supporting education, the arts and culture, environment, health, human services, and public/society benefit. Governor Braxton Bragg Comer served as Alabama’s governor from 1907 to 1911 and was praised for his contributions to the educational systems of Alabama. During his term in office, appropriations for education increased, and the county high school system was established, ensuring that there was a high school in every county. Before serving as Alabama’s governor, B. B. Comer established Avondale Mills in 1897. The Comer family was at the helm of this southern-owned business for 89 years. In 1986, upon the sale of Avondale Mills, the Comer family retained control of the Educational and Charitable Foundation, and it was renamed The Comer Foundation at that time. The Foundation supports education primarily through a generous scholarship program as well as other efforts to improve society, particularly, in the counties where Avondale Mills operated, such as Jefferson, Talladega, and Barbour Counties
