Overview

Climate Fund

Funder: CIV:LAB Inc

Status: Active since 2022

Geographic Scope: Currently active in New York City, Michigan, and LA County

Focus Areas:

  • Place-based climate education

  • Climate workforce development

  • Climate technology solutions
  • Award Type: Unrestricted, one-time grants

Rationale: CIV:LAB developed and launched the Climate Fund in direct response to observed need for more grant funding directed towards climate change. The fund addresses the critical need for funding to be directed towards local and hyperlocal climate solutions, and the overwhelming need for unrestricted funding that isn't locked into specific programming to support overheads, salaries, and flexible funding.

Decision-Making Process: Inspired by the Participatory Grantmaking movement, the fund's decision-making process is driven by the local climate community in each place the Fund is active. Advisory Committees made up of local climate leaders and people who work and live on the frontlines of the climate crisis make final funding decisions, with CIV:LAB serving as a neutral entity.

Advisory Committees: Separate committees for NYC, Michigan, and LA County
