Carla B. Vendeland Memorial Scholarship

Funder: Newport High School PTSA, administered by Bellevue Schools Foundation

Geographic Scope: Newport High School, Bellevue, Washington

Background: Newport High School parent Carla Vendeland created the PTSA Knight Valor Program in 1989 to recognize students making a difference in their community. Carla was an avid volunteer supporting world hunger relief and education initiatives. She passed away in 1994 from cancer. The scholarship was established in her memory in 1996.

Award Amount: At least one $1,000 scholarship awarded annually. Award is distributed to one male and one female participant.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating senior at Newport High School

  • Must have earned the PTSA Knight Valor Award (minimum of 41+ community service hours, with 40 hours being the BSD graduation requirement)

    • Focus: Recognizes and supports graduating seniors who have demonstrated commitment to community service and volunteer work.

    Selection Criteria:

  • Number of community service hours completed

  • Quality of community service

  • Essay describing most rewarding volunteer activity and impact learned

  • References from non-profit organizations where student volunteered

  • Essay of no more than 400 words describing your most rewarding volunteer activity or activities

  • In the essay, explain:

    • - What you learned about community need
    - The impact of your work
    - (Optional) How or where you are committed to serving your community in the future

    Page Three - Community Service Hours Documentation:

  • Document showing community service hours (screenshot from Naviance is sufficient)

  • Page must include your name and student ID number

    • Submission Instructions:
    1. Prepare all three pages as specified above
    2. Submit via online application (button available on scholarship page)
    3. Ensure good email address is provided as follow-up questions may be required
