Carla B. Vendeland Memorial Scholarship

Geographic Scope: Newport High School, Bellevue, Washington

Background: Newport High School parent Carla Vendeland created the PTSA Knight Valor Program in 1989 to recognize students making a difference in their community. Carla was an avid volunteer supporting world hunger relief and education initiatives. She passed away in 1994 from cancer. The scholarship was established in her memory in 1996.

Award Amount: At least one $1,000 scholarship awarded annually. Award is distributed to one male and one female participant.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating senior at Newport High School

  • Must have earned the PTSA Knight Valor Award (minimum of 41+ community service hours, with 40 hours being the BSD graduation requirement)
  • Focus: Recognizes and supports graduating seniors who have demonstrated commitment to community service and volunteer work.

    Selection Criteria:

  • Number of community service hours completed

  • Quality of community service

  • Essay describing most rewarding volunteer activity and impact learned

  • References from non-profit organizations where student volunteered

    Page Three - Community Service Hours Documentation:

  • Document showing community service hours (screenshot from Naviance is sufficient)

  • Page must include your name and student ID number
  • Submission Instructions:
    1. Prepare all three pages as specified above
