Overview

Capacity Building Grant

Funder: Colorado Plateau Foundation (Flagstaff, AZ)

Overview: CPF's primary grant program supports Native-led organizations building local capacity and long-term sustainability through proposals addressing at least one of four priority areas.

    Four Priority Areas

  • Protection of Water: Supporting groups stewarding this life-giving resource, recognizing the cultural importance of water for tribes across the Colorado Plateau
  • Protection of Sacred Places & Endangered Landscapes: Supporting groups integrating tribal voices into landscape management and safeguarding sacred places, recognizing that lands are inseparable from cultures and communities
  • Preservation of Language: Supporting language preservation as tribal languages are the vessels through which ancestral knowledge is passed to future generations and are threatened with extinction
  • Sustainable, Community-based Agriculture: Supporting organizations reclaiming sustainable, community-based agriculture and native foods essential to the Colorado Plateau's tribes

    Geographic Scope

  • Colorado Plateau region (130,000-square-mile area roughly centered over the Four Corners area in southwest United States)
  • Tribal nations on the Colorado Plateau including Navajo Nation, Hopi Nation, Ute Mountain Ute, Southern Ute, and other Colorado Plateau tribes

    Eligibility

    Who CPF Funds:
  • Native majority-led Non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Tribal governments with IRS 7871 status
  • Organizations with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor within tribal nations on the Colorado Plateau
  • Native-controlled organizations (majority of governing board and staff are Native)
  • Organizations in good standing with CPF (previous grantees)

What We Fund:

  • Proposals in the range of $1,000-$25,000

  • Capacity-building needs for organizations in early stages

  • Internal operations strengthening including: succession planning, board development, fundraising planning, staff training, strategic planning, organizational audits, purchasing accounting software, and purchasing equipment

  • Needs assessments that inform strategy

  • Start-up or pilot projects with clearly stated steps toward end goals

    • Individuals (organizations only)
    • Non-Native majority-led organizations
    • Businesses

      Long-term General Operating Grants

      CPF provides general operating support to previous grantees in good standing. Requirements include:
    • Informing Program Officer immediately or before mid-year of any adjustments necessary to projected goals
    • Attending Learning Community and Learning Journey Interviews
    • Inviting CPF staff to attend organizational gatherings when appropriate

      Reporting Requirements

    • No written end-of-year report required
    • Virtual meeting with Program Officer Marissa Nuvayestewa (~30 minutes) to discuss grant outcomes and share mutually beneficial information

    How to Apply

    Annual Grant Cycle Timeline

    1. Early August - Grant cycle opens 2. Early September - Application due 3. Mid-September - Application review 4. October - Board approval of grant awards 5. Early November - Grant award announcement 6. Late November - Grant agreements signed & awards disbursed

    Application Process

    1. Submit application through CPF Foundant portal 2. Include proposal with all required documents by deadline 3. Provide: - Amount of funds requested - Intended use of funds - Goals and objectives aligned with request - Demonstration of eligibility criteria met 4. Program Officer may email or call for clarification if information is missing 5. All required proposal documents must be provided by deadline

      Evaluation Criteria

      CPF considers these factors when evaluating proposals:
    • Proposal submitted within grant deadline
    • Proposal meets eligibility criteria
    • All requested proposal documents provided by deadline
    • Organization in good standing with CPF
    • Goals and objectives align with funding request
    • If all criteria met, Program Officer recommends for consideration by CPF staff and approval by CPF Board of Directors

      Important Notes

    • Late submissions will be declined in fairness to those who submitted on time
    • Incomplete proposals will be considered declined if applicant does not respond to requests for clarification
    • Proposals declined in previous years will be reconsidered if resubmitted and meets criteria
    • Declined proposals can be resubmitted the following year under same evaluation standards
