Overview

Ben May Charitable Trust Grant Mr. Ben May of Mobile, Alabama established the Ben May Charitable Trust November 6, 1971 for charitable, scientific or educational uses and purposes as may be selected from time to time by a Distribution Committee in its absolute discretion. During his lifetime, Mr. May funded the Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research (now The Ben May Department in the Division of Biological Science) at the University of Chicago. He served on the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science and he supported famed researcher Alexander Flemming, the discoverer of penicillin. At the University of Chicago he supported the Nobel Laureate Dr. Charles Huggins and Dr. Elwood Jensen, winner of the Lasker Award. Mr. May was also instrumental in funding medical research at the Southern Research Institute where Dr. Howard Skipper pioneered the concept of adjuvant chemotherapy for early stage cancer. Mr. May suggested the Distribution Committee consider funding the University of Chicago, The American Friends of the Hebrew University and the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. Mr. May's son, Ben May, Jr., also provided for the Ben May Charitable Trust at his death in 1997.
