BE Resilient Walk-On Scholarship

Overview: The Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation launched the BE Resilient Walk-On Scholarship in 2025 to recognize and support the dedication, perseverance, and heart of walk-on student-athletes. This scholarship honors the underdog spirit — the drive to show up, work hard, and rise to the occasion without the promise of recognition.

Award Amount: Two (2) $10,000 awards each per year, renewable for up to three (3) additional years

Geographic Scope: United States (must be U.S. citizen or legal resident)

Focus Areas: Supporting walk-on student-athletes who exemplify resilience and determination

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a college sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student
  • Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States
  • Must be a rostered athlete on a varsity team, confirmed by their coach
  • Must be receiving $5,000 or less in athletic aid
  • Must be maintaining the academic eligibility requirements of the university and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress
  • Renewability: Renewable for up to three (3) additional years so long as awardee remains enrolled at the same university and maintains the academic eligibility requirements of their university

Background

Baker Mayfield became the first-ever walk-on to open an FBS season as quarterback at Texas Tech University before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. He became the first-ever walk-on player to win the Heisman Trophy in 2017 and the first former walk-on selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
