Overview

AUW ALICE Fund

Geographic Scope: Oʻahu, Hawaii

Focus Areas: Financial stability and economic mobility for ALICE households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)

Overview:
Established in 2018, the AUW ALICE Fund is the dedicated funding source for the ALICE Initiative. ALICE represents individuals and families unable to cover basic household expenses and who possess little to no savings. ALICE Households are particularly vulnerable to emergencies and unforeseen expenses and run serious risk of falling into poverty.

Background:

  • First ALICE Report released in 2017 (based on 2015 data)

  • Made possible by initial investment from Bank of Hawaiʻi Foundation, Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, and Kamehameha Schools

  • Hawaii was the only state in the country to publish a 2022 ALICE Report (based on 2022 data)

  • The 2022 report showed poverty increased from 9% to 15% post-pandemic
  • ALICE Initiative Structure:

  • First ALICE Cohort (2019-2021): 10 nonprofit organizations working collaboratively during COVID-19 pandemic

  • Second ALICE Cohort (2022-2024): 17 nonprofit organizations

  • Co-led by Aloha United Way and Hawaiʻi Community Foundation
  • Major Funders/Supporters:

  • Hawaiʻi Community Foundation: $750,000 annually (2022-2024) plus continued commitment

  • HEI Charitable Foundation: $100,000 annually for 3 years
