Artist in Residence Program

Program Description: Grand Canyon Conservancy's Artist in Residence Program invites contemporary artists to live on-site at Grand Canyon National Park for 4-10 weeks to pursue place-based research and engage the public through innovative artwork and compelling programs.

Geographic Scope: Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, US

Focus Areas:

  • Contemporary art creation (immersive, interactive, participatory work)

  • Creative interpretation and resource education

  • Place-based artistic inquiry

  • Environmental and cultural storytelling

  • Public engagement through exhibitions, films, performances, workshops, and participatory projects
  • What We Look For:

  • Contemporary artists with demonstrable success in creating place-based, immersive, interactive, or participatory artworks

  • Artists who center the audience's experience

  • Conceptual focus on environmental sciences and/or regional histories preferred
  • What We Provide:

  • Free accommodation at Grand Canyon National Park

  • Weekly stipend

  • Travel subsidy

  • Staff support with program development and execution

  • Opportunities to work with K-12 students

  • Ongoing opportunities as alumni to return and stay involved in nationwide network
  • Program Structure (2026 Pilot Year):

  • 3 competitive international positions selected through merit-based review

  • 1 Local Artist in Residence nominated by regional arts and culture institutions

  • 1 NAU Emerging Artist Award for emerging artist from Northern Arizona University School of Art + Design graduating seniors and alumni
  • Selection Process: Competitive application process with peer panel review

    Application Timeline:

  • Applications open annually from May - July

  • Submit through application portal: Call for Entry (Creative West)
  • Application Materials Required:
    1. Artist Statement - Describing your artistic vision and approach
    2. Biography - Professional background and experience
    3. Project Proposal - Specific, detailed proposal including:
    - Artist's vision and plan for the residency
    - Research phase details
    - Development phase details
    - Implementation phase details
    - How you will engage visitors and the public
    4. Work Samples - Demonstrating your ability to carry out the proposed work
    - May include documentation of previous place-based projects
    - Evidence of success with interactive/participatory work
    - Photos and/or videos of previous public programs

    Application Support:

  • Residency Program staff offer one to two information sessions to support artists with their proposals

  • Information session dates for 2026 have not yet been announced

  • Calls are announced through mailing list, website, and social media
  • Residency Duration: 4-10 weeks onsite
