Arrell M. Gibson Award Grant

The Arrell M. Gibson Award, presented by the Western History Association, honors the best essay on Native American history published in the last calendar year. This $500 prize has no restrictions on time period or geography, focusing instead on the significance, contributions to knowledge, and literary quality of the essays submitted. The award encourages scholarly engagement and public education in the field of Native American history.

The Western History Association strives to be a congenial home for the study and teaching of all aspects of North American Wests, frontiers, homelands, and borderlands.
Enable collaborations among peoples, institutions, and organizations devoted to the study of western history. Conduct an annual conference at which western history teachers, scholars, and professionals share their research and exchange ideas that facilitate further study of the North American West. Publish an award-winning journal that employs rigorous peer reviews to identify, improve, and distribute original western history scholarship.Promote public education on western history through active involvement with teachers, museums, non profit organizations, libraries, and other venues.
No time period or geographic restrictions apply, and essays will be judged on their significance to the field of Native American history, their contributions to knowledge, and their literary quality.

Eligibility

Any WHA member, publisher, or author of an essay/article, may nominate work that was published in the last calendar year.
