Area Grants Program

Funder: Order of Malta American Association (Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta)

Geographic Scope: United States - 30 Areas across the country

Mission Alignment: To help accomplish the Order's mission to defend the faith and serve the poor and the sick

Funding Source

The Malta Human Services Foundation donates money annually to be used solely for the American Association's Grant Program. The amount of their donation is based on 5% of the Malta Human Services Foundation's investments average market value over the past 5 years.

Grant Allocation

The allocation of grant monies is determined by the American Association's Board of Directors.

Traditionally, monies are divided between:

  • International works: Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem and Malteser International

  • Official American Association works: Prison Ministry, Malta Mobile Ministries, Malta Camp USA

  • Local Areas: For distribution to non-profit organizations within their regions and local Area projects
    • Eligibility

    • Tax-exempt organizations
    • Local Area projects in which Order members participate by volunteering their time and services
    • Member involvement requirement: Members must be actively involved in the organizations and local Area projects applying for an American Association Grant

    Fund Allocation by Area

    The allocation of funds to each Area is determined by the number of members in each Area who have paid their annual contribution by January 31st.

    Review Process

    Each Area Chair appoints a Grant Committee within their Area to review and recommend which grant applicants should be awarded a grant and the amount to be awarded.

    Application Process

    Member Access Required: Members should click on the Members Only section of the website to access application details for the current Area Grants Program.

    Key Deadlines:

  • January 31st: Deadline for Area members to pay their annual contribution (this determines fund allocation)

  • Applications should be submitted to your local Area Grant Committee
  • Process Steps:
    1. Contact your Area Chair or Area Grant Committee to obtain application materials
    2. Complete grant application with organization/project information
    3. Submit to Area Grant Committee for review
    4. Area Committee reviews and recommends awardees and amounts
    5. Board of Directors approves final allocation

    Required Eligibility:

  • Organization must be tax-exempt

  • Members applying must be actively involved in the organization or project

  • Organization/project must serve the sick and poor
