Arc Core Investigator Program

Arc Core Investigators are world-class researchers provided with no-strings-attached, multi-year funding and cutting-edge scientific and infrastructure support to enable high-risk, high-reward science.

Appointment Terms

• Appointment Duration: Eight-year renewable terms
• Employment: Core Investigators are employed by Arc Institute
• Faculty Appointments: May hold concurrent faculty appointments at partner universities (Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UCSF)

Geographic Scope

• Location: Palo Alto, CA (Arc Headquarters in Stanford Research Park)
• Partner Universities: Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UCSF

Eligibility

• Current faculty of all ranks at Arc partner universities (Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UCSF)
• Tenure status dependent on specific search
• Individuals authorized to work in the US, as well as those requiring visa sponsorship, are eligible

• Neurobiology
• Immunology
• Computational Science/Machine Learning
• Research emphasis on application to complex human disease

Funding

• Budget: Generous and guaranteed annual budget to support labs of up to 18 people
• Typical Lab Size: 8-18 lab members
• Flexibility: No-strings-attached, unrestricted funding with complete autonomy to pursue research ideas
• Additional Support: Can maintain existing NIH and federal grants; eligible for foundation grants

Lab Space & Infrastructure

• Location: Arc Headquarters in Palo Alto, CA (100,000 sq ft facility)
• Space Capacity: Lab and office space for up to 18 people
• Features: State-of-the-art equipment, bright sunlit spaces, open lab floor plans
• Equipment: Outfitted for major molecular biology, biochemistry, and genomics workflows

Resources & Support

• Access to five Technology Centers: Multi-Omics, Genome Engineering, Cellular Models, Mammalian Models, and Computational
• General operational and lab support with centralized stockroom
• Shared equipment for major molecular biology, biochemistry, and genomics workflows
• Access to core facilities at Arc and partner universities (e.g., in-house flow cytometry core, joint Cryo-EM knowledge center with Stanford)
• Dedicated operational support team (50+ members) covering: recruiting, scientific publications, IP, people management, communications, academic affairs
• Dedicated scientific publication support
• Administrative support for university relations and academic affairs

Teaching & Collaboration

• Can maintain faculty appointments at partner universities with associated teaching responsibilities
• May have graduate and postdoctoral students join lab
• Can continue collaborations with faculty at other universities outside current partner institutions

Intellectual Property

• Arc manages intellectual property with defined policies for researchers

1. Open Rank Search (General)

• Target: Current faculty of all ranks at partner universities
• Application Timeline: Rolling basis - new applications accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis

2. Coordinated Search - Stanford Bioengineering

• Target: Associate or Full Professor rank researchers
• Research Focus: Computational science/machine learning, immunology, neuroscience (with emphasis on complex human disease)
• Two Separate Applications Required: Must apply to both Arc Institute AND Stanford Department of Bioengineering
• Timeline: New applications accepted and reviewed until position is filled
