AMWA Women Lead Scholarship

Funder: American Medical Women's Association (AMWA)

Overview: The Women Lead program is designed to encourage women physicians to pursue political office and engage in health policy. The program provides funding to support AMWA physician members to attend the AMA Political Action Campaign (AMPAC) School, held annually in December.

Background: At a time when physicians are underrepresented in elected office (only 15 physicians in Congress; only 1% of state legislators are physicians), women physicians are particularly underrepresented. There are currently no women physicians in the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives. Women physicians bring important expertise and viewpoints to policy discussions on healthcare issues. The AMPAC Campaign School is recognized as one of the top programs in the country for developing political strategists and supporting physician candidates for Congressional offices.

Eligibility:

  • Current AMWA physician member (MD/DO)

  • Must confirm membership status at time of application

    • Award Details:

  • Amount: $1,000 per year

  • Purpose: Support attendance at AMPAC Campaign School (held in December)

  • Selection: One AMWA physician member selected annually

    • What They Fund:

  • AMPAC Campaign School attendance fees and related costs

    • Special Requirements:

  • Recipients are asked to submit an article to the AMWA Newsflash about their experiences

  • Application or scholarship selection does not guarantee acceptance into the AMPAC Campaign School

  • The AMPAC Campaign School is a comprehensive, bipartisan program

  • Features a simulated campaign for U.S. House of Representatives

  • Includes demographics, voting statistics, and candidate biographies
