AHS Athletic Boosters Scholarship Program

Overview: The Alameda High School Athletic Boosters has established a scholarship program of four (4) separate and distinct scholarships of $500 each to be awarded annually to graduating seniors.

Geographic Scope: Alameda High School, Alameda, California

Focus Areas: Four distinct scholarship categories:

  • Scanlan Davis Derrick Award (Best All Around) - Natural & talented athlete, positive attitude, consistently gives best effort, team leader, exhibits strong character and composure both on and off the field, is respected and liked by both teammates and coaches

  • Best Academic Athlete - Exceptional performance in both academics and athletics

  • Best Athlete - Outstanding performance in their sport, strong work ethic, focused and disciplined

  • Best Teammate - Inspirational, supportive, good sportsmanship, committed to team and teammates, exhibits humility and is a joy to coach
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be graduating seniors who competed in and completed the season during the current school year

  • Must qualify for graduation at the end of that same year

  • Must illustrate sportsmanship both on and off the field

  • Best Teammate and Scanlan Davis Derrick nominees: Minimum of one year of play in their sport

  • All nominees: Minimum 2.50 GPA for all years attending high school

  • Best Academic Athlete: Minimum 3.75 GPA all four (4) years of high school

  • Must have a school attendance record of 95% or better for all year(s) attending AHS

  • Coaches should consider nominees with good attendance for their sport (minimum percentage of attendance not required)
  • Submission Process:

  • Nominations submitted by: Head coach of the student-athlete's team sport only

  • One head coach may submit one (1) nominee for each of the four scholarships, but each submission must be a different graduating senior student-athlete

  • One head coach may not nominate the same student-athlete for multiple scholarships

  • If a student-athlete is nominated for more than one scholarship by different coaches in different sports, the committee will take this into consideration

  • However: A student-athlete may not be awarded more than one scholarship
  • Selection Process:

  • All nominations reviewed and selections made by AHS Athletic Boosters voting board members (except the Scholarship Coordinator)

  • Scholarship Coordinator redacts student athlete name, sport, and coach information so voting is blind

  • AHS Administration verifies school attendance and GPAs for nominated student athletes

  • In case of a tie, AHS Athletic Director serves as deciding vote based on redacted nomination submissions

  • Scholarship Selection Committee meets on agreed upon date to select recipients

  • Scholarships presented to recipients at Senior Awards Night

  • Nominees not selected receive a letter of recognition from AHS Athletic Boosters
  • Organization: AHS Athletic Boosters - registered 501(c)3 non-profit, federal tax ID #94-2650418

    2025-26 Recipients:

  • Best Athlete: Daniel Pell – Men's Soccer

  • Best Academic Athlete: Casey Koga-Dean – Football

  • Best Teammate: Kristofer Cabrera – Cross Country

  • Scanlan Davis Derrick / Best All-Around Athlete: Maxwell Fry – Men's Soccer
  • How to Apply

    Scholarship Application Process

    Submission Timeline:

  • All nominations must be completed and submitted by May 1st at 5:00 PM each year to be considered
  • Who Can Apply:

  • Head coaches only - Nominations must be submitted by the head coach of the student-athlete's team sport

  • Each head coach may submit one (1) nominee for each of the four scholarships

  • Each submission must be a different graduating senior student-athlete

  • A head coach may not nominate the same student-athlete for multiple scholarships
  • Application Method:

  • Nominations submitted using the online AHS Athletic Boosters Scholarship Nomination form on the website

  • Submitted online nominations go to the AHS Athletic Boosters Board member serving as the "Scholarship Coordinator"
  • Required Information in Nomination:
    1. Sport selection (dropdown menu of all AHS sports)
    2. Scholarship category selection:
    - Scanlan Davis Derrick Award (Best All Around)
    - Best Academic Athlete
    - Best Athlete
    - Best Teammate
    3. Applicant's information (including gender: Male, Female, Non-binary)
    4. Estimated game and practice attendance
    5. Head coach confirmation (checkbox stating "I confirm I am the head coach of the nominated student-athlete")

    Verification Process:

  • AHS Administration is responsible for confirming:

  • - School attendance for all nominated student athletes
    - GPAs of student athletes nominated for Best Academic and Best All Around (Scanlan Davis Derrick Award) nominations

    Selection Timeline:

  • AHS Athletic Boosters Scholarship Selection Committee meets on an agreed upon date at committee members' earliest convenience to select scholarship recipients
