Overview

Family Medicine Cares International Resident Scholarship The AAFP Foundation provides one scholarship for a family medicine resident to be part of the Family Medicine Cares International Delegation. Program Description The AAFP Foundation provides one scholarship for a family medicine resident to be part of the Family Medicine Cares International Delegation. The 2026 Delegation to the Dominican Republic is February 7-14, 2026. The Family Medicine Cares International (FMCI) Program, developed and funded by the AAFP Foundation seeks to support, enhance, and increase local medical workforce capacity by building and improving healthcare outcomes for vulnerable people in the Dominican Republic through medical education and direct clinical care. This scholarship covers the following expenses: Travel to the Dominican Republic and in-country, including housing and food. Scholars will give a presentation on the experience at AAFP FUTURE (formerly National Conference), and expenses will be covered as part of the travel scholarship. We encourage all to apply and those committed to supporting global health efforts and reflect the rich diversity of the specialty and the patients served.

Resident candidates must:Be a PGY2 or PGY3 Family Medicine Resident and in good AAFP membership standing at the time of the application deadline.Address what the FMCI scholarship would do for their interest in global health and/or the impact on their education.Submit a letter of recommendation from their program director stating their support of the trip and the impact the resident will make if chosen.Be eligible to present and share their experiences during the AAFP’s FUTURE (formerly National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students) conference in July 2026 or other appropriate venue.All Candidates should:Demonstrate an interest in international family medicine, international travel and/or involvement in humanitarian initiatives.Have good communication/writing skills, as demonstrated in his/her cover letter.Demonstrate leadership skills. Be able to lift heavy objects and be in good physical condition for travel and volunteering during the trip. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.
