2026 Fit for Kids Community Grants

Funder: Making Kane County Fit for Kids

Overview: Making Kane County Fit for Kids invites community organizations to apply for funds to support projects that focus on active living and healthy eating among children in Kane County.

    Eligibility

  • Geographic scope: Kane County, Illinois
  • Eligible applicants: Non-profit organizations, schools, and units of local government located within Kane County
  • Funding not available to: Individuals

    Funding Details

  • Award range: $500 - $10,000 per project
  • Average award: ~$5,000
  • Total funding available: Over $800,000 has been provided to date for more than 110 implementation projects

    Focus Areas

  • Environmental and systems changes that lead to increased physical activity and healthy eating
  • Implementation of strategies described in the Fit Kids Plan
  • Projects serving high-risk or at-risk populations, including low-income and racial/ethnic minority populations

    Project Requirements

  • All projects must include data collection and project impact evaluation
  • Stewardship report required including: demographic data of target population, participation numbers (if appropriate), outcome data, and photographs
  • Organization's governing board must have reviewed and formally endorsed or adopted the Fit Kids 2020 Plan (or must do so within first three months of project period)
  • Projects must demonstrate system and policy changes

    Review Criteria

  • Contribution to Fit Kids 2020 Plan priorities
  • Project readiness and ability to proceed without obstacles
  • Evidence of site control, appropriate zoning
  • Matching funds and leverage of other funding sources
  • Community impact and benefit to at-risk populations
  • Sustainability and lasting change

    Example Funded Projects

  • Installation of bike racks to support active transportation
  • Community gardens to increase engagement and access to healthy food
  • Kitchen equipment for healthy eating and cooking education
  • Street signage and pedestrian timers for safe active transportation
  • Playground equipment for physical activity
  • Heart rate monitors for physical education
  • Recess games and equipment
  • Bike repair stations

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Download and complete the application form using the online form provided

2. Required documents to submit:
- Completed application form with project goals grid and questionnaire
- Project budget (itemized with all project expenses and funding sources, indicating status of each)
- Project timeline (schedule with key target completion dates)
- Supporting documents as applicable

3. Application form sections:
- Project information (name, location, applicant details)
- Contact information (name, title, phone, fax, email)
- Project funding (total cost, funds from other sources, amount requested)

4. Project Goals Grid:
- Provide general statement explaining problem/opportunity
- Identify target population
- List project goals with:
- Methods/processes to reach each goal
- How you will know you met the goal (measures and data collected)

5. Narrative Questions:
- Provide detailed description of project/program, including target population and geographic area served
- Describe applicant's experience administering similar projects/programs and qualifications of personnel
- Explain if project is collaborative; if so, describe other entities involved
- Briefly describe organization and its history (include website/Facebook if applicable)

6. Applicant Certification:
- Organization must have formally endorsed Fit Kids 2020 Plan, OR agree to do so by deadline
- Certify you have read and understand grant guidelines
- Certify all information is true and complete
- Understand that false information may result in disqualification
- Agree not to discriminate based on protected characteristics
- Digitally sign the application

7. Submission:
- Submit electronically using the online form
- Include all required supporting documents
- Ensure all materials are properly completed
