Work Scholar Program

Overview: A three-month seasonal residential work-exchange opportunity rooted in service, discipline, and humility. Designed for individuals who have already done inner work and are ready to contribute their energy in service to others.

Tagline: "Come to Serve. Leave Transformed." This is not a retreat; it is a calling.

Program Philosophy

The program is built on the belief that "the greatest transformation often begins when we commit to something larger than ourselves." Work Scholars are described as "the backbone of Esalen's mission to awaken human potential through hands-on labor, deep presence, and care for others."

    Program Duration & Dates

    Seasonal cycles (three months each):
  • May 31 – August 22, 2026
  • August 23 – November 14, 2026
  • November 15, 2026 – February 6, 2027
  • February 7 – May 1, 2027
  • May 2 – July 24, 2027
  • July 25 – October 16, 2027
  • October 17, 2027 – January 8, 2028

Key Program Components

#### Service Component

  • Time commitment: ~36 hours per week in operational departments

  • Assignment: Kitchen or CABinS (Housekeeping/Conscious Aware Beings in Service)

  • Additional opportunities: Farm & Garden (6 hours/week)

  • Compensation: $16.90/hour wage

  • Payment: Bi-weekly pay periods

  • Residential fee: $200 per pay period (deducted from wages)
  • #### Specific Tasks

  • Washing dishes and stewarding kitchen spaces

  • Changing over guest rooms and cleaning

  • Chopping vegetables, food prep, and meal assistance

  • Folding laundry and supporting guest spaces

  • Planting, weeding, harvesting in Farm & Garden

  • Supporting operational flow with mindfulness and accountability

  • Participating in daily rhythms of purposeful action and shared intention
  • #### Study Component

  • Time: 4 hours per week

  • Faculty-led classes: Two weekly sessions on Esalen's foundational practices

  • Curriculum themes (cyclical monthly):

  • - Landing in Place: Ecological attunement and place-based presence
    - Landing in Body: Somatic intelligence and resilience
    - Landing in Community: Relational awareness and collective care
    - Landing in the Unseen: Ritual, intuition and emergence
  • Additional monthly themes:

  • - Place and Presence: Connection with Esalen's foundational elements, land, thought leaders, and vision for human potential
    - Meditation and Mindfulness: Direct instruction and cultivation of personal practice; mindful connection to work and community
    - Embodied Inquiry: Somatic experiencing and awareness in service of self-inquiry and expression

      Physical Requirements

    • Ability to work on feet for extended periods
    • Capable of carrying up to 50 lbs
    • Navigate stairs and uneven terrain
    • Tolerate various weather conditions
    • Campus is rugged with 120 acres requiring robust physical activity

      Housing & Accommodations

    • Type: Garden View rooms (shared accommodations)
    • Stairs: Up 8 mini-flights of stairs equaling 44 steps to access rooms
    • Room amenities: Downstairs and loft space, 5-drawer dresser, ~48 inch wide closet, mini-fridge, bathroom with toilet and shower
    • Shared facilities: Limited privacy; shared bathrooms and amenities with other residents
    • Capacity: Multiple people per room
    • Special note: Emotional support animals (ESAs) not permitted; service animals per ADA allowed

      Meals & Food

    • Three nourishing meals per day included
    • Provided as part of residential package
    • Accommodations for dietary restrictions documented

      Compensation Package

    • Hourly wage: $16.90/hour
    • Hours: ~36 hours per week
    • Frequency: Bi-weekly pay
    • Deductions: $200 per pay period for residential fee

    • Important Notes on Program Scope

      NOT a therapeutic program: The Work Scholar Program is explicitly not:
    • A drug or alcohol rehabilitation program
    • A mental health treatment program
    • A therapeutic retreat
    • A healing retreat for those in crisis

    Intended for: Individuals already on stable ground in personal growth, emotionally and physically resourced to contribute in service to others.
