Whatcom County Youth Soccer Association Academic Scholarship

Overview: A $1,500 annual scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors who have participated in WCYSA. The scholarship is split equally between one male and one female recipient, with each receiving $750.

    Eligibility

  • Participants: Soccer players who have participated in WCYSA
  • Academic Focus: Limited to academics; applicants must be accepted to a community college, four-year university, or technical school
  • GPA Requirement: Minimum 3.0 grade point average
  • Grade Level: Graduating high school seniors

    Award Details

  • Amount: $750 per recipient (one male, one female)
  • Disbursement: Check written directly to the recipient's school

    Application Requirements

    Applicants must provide:
  • Number of years involved in soccer
  • Level of play (recreational, select, ODP teams, high school, etc.)
  • Positions played
  • Special soccer awards received
  • Refereeing experience (if applicable)
  • Coaching experience (if applicable)
  • Extracurricular activities and community service outside of soccer
  • Academic plans following high school graduation
  • Minimum one personal recommendation from:
  • 1. A member of the soccer community, OR 2. A member of the academic community, OR 3. A character reference from outside academic and soccer community - Note: References from parents or family will NOT be considered
  • Letter from school counselor confirming satisfaction of graduation requirements
  • Official transcript at time of application and proof of graduation

    Process

  • Application Period: March through early May (specific date varies by year)
  • Selection Committee: WCYSA Board of Directors
  • Notification: Recipients determined and voted on at May WCYSA Board Meeting
  • Notification Method: Distributed through WCYSA teams (U18/U19), WCYSA Clubs, and WCYSA Newsletter

How to Apply

1. Obtain Application Materials
- Download the 2025 Scholarship Packet from the WCYSA website
- Check for current year deadline on application form

2. Complete Application Form
- Provide personal information as a graduating high school senior

3. Provide Required Information
- Document years of soccer participation
- List level(s) of play (recreational, select, ODP, high school)
- Identify positions played
- List special soccer awards
- Indicate refereeing experience
- Indicate coaching experience
- Describe extracurricular activities and community service (non-soccer)
- Explain academic plans after high school

4. Gather Recommendation Letters
- Obtain minimum one (1) personal recommendation from one of:
- Soccer community member, OR
- Academic community member, OR
- Character reference outside academic/soccer community
- Do not submit references from parents or family members

5. Obtain School Documentation
- Request letter from school counselor confirming graduation requirements met
- Obtain official transcript

6. Submit Application
- Application window: March through early May
- Include all required documents with application
- Provide updated transcript at proof of graduation

7. Selection and Notification
- WCYSA Board of Directors will review applications
- Committee selects finalists to be voted on at May Board Meeting
- Winners notified after May Board Meeting
- Award check issued to recipient's school
