Overview

WDMS Medical Student Scholarship

Funder: Worcester District Medical Society (WDMS)

Purpose: To lessen the burden of medical school debt for diverse medical student residents of Central Massachusetts who demonstrate commitment to community service.

Geographic Scope: Central Massachusetts (specific cities and towns listed)

Award Details:

  • Multiple scholarships and book awards ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 awarded annually

  • Over 1 million dollars awarded to 412 Central Massachusetts medical students since inception

  • Scholarships limited to one award per academic year and not to exceed 3 awards by graduation

  • Awards dispersed at Annual Fall District Meeting and Awards Ceremony in November
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal resident of Central Massachusetts at the time of applying to medical school

  • Currently enrolled as a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student in an accredited allopathic (MD) or osteopathic (DO) medical school

  • Not on leave, in gap year, pursuing degree programs (MPH, PhD), or in fellowship year at time of award dispersal

  • Full-time student in good academic standing with satisfactory academic progress

  • Demonstrates involvement in community service

  • Has financial need

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Application Timeline:

  • Applications accepted: June 1 - September 1 annually

  • Interviews conducted: Early fall

  • Recipients notified: Mid-October

  • Awards presented: Mid-November at Fall District Meeting
  • Required Materials:
    1. Completed application form
    2. Two letters of recommendation (sent directly to WDMS from authors)
    3. Personal essay describing career goals in medicine and why deserving of award
    4. Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    5. Medical school transcript (sent directly to WDMS from student affairs office)
    6. Verification documentation from medical school financial aid office including:
    - Good standing and full-time enrollment status
    - Legal residency in Central Massachusetts at time of medical school application
    - Applicant's ethnic and/or racial background(s) as documented in medical school application
    - Current debt and estimated debt burden upon graduation
    - Any additional information regarding financial need (first-generation college status, etc.)

    Interview Process:

  • All eligible applicants with complete applications will be interviewed in early fall

  • Format: In-person or telephone/Zoom

  • Candidates should be prepared to discuss:

  • - Desire to become a physician
    - Community service/volunteer involvement
    - Unique attributes
    - Financial need

  • Only complete applications will be considered

  • Financial aid offices in all accredited medical schools deduct award amount from loan amount available

  • Applicants must contact their financial aid office for required verifications

  • Misrepresentation may cause denial or withdrawal of scholarship
