This annual national award is sponsored by Alcon and is available to optometry students during any point in their professional program at an ASCO-affiliated school or college of optometry in the U.S. and Canada.

How to Apply

Application Process

Essay Requirements:
The application consists of an essay of up to 1,500 words describing any one of the following scenarios:

1. Patient-Based Case Study: A case the student encountered as part of their clinical learning experience
2. Research-Based Case Scenario: A scenario from clinical or didactic learning experience
3. Professional Ethics Scenario: An ethical situation encountered during clinical or didactic learning

Essay Content Requirements

The essay must:

  • Describe and discuss the ethical theories and values used in the decision-making process

  • Address relevant state laws relating to the case (if applicable)
    • Submission Format

    • Submitted as a Word document or PDF
    • Each school or college of optometry is permitted to submit only one essay
    • Submission through the assigned award coordinator for the student's school

    Selection Process

    A committee of the ASCO Ethics Educators SIG (Special Interest Group) will select one national recipient.
