The Agnes and Margaret Macmillan Scholarship, established by the Saint Andrew's Society in New York, offers five annual scholarships worth $45,000 each. Aimed at fostering academic exchange, it supports US students studying in Scotland and Scottish students in the US. Candidates must demonstrate Scottish descent and reside in specific Northeastern states. This scholarship honors the legacy of Margaret 'Peggy' Macmillan, who significantly contributed to the fund in memory of her sister Agnes.

Overview

In 1956, Saint Andrew’s Society expanded its mission to include a merit-based scholarship program. Since its inception, the Scholarship Program has awarded more than 200 graduate-level academic scholarships to promote exchange between American and Scottish universities. The Society awards five scholarships annually, each valued at $45,000 USD, to support graduate study for one year - three for US students to study in Scotland and two for Scottish students to study in the United States - all of whom are invited to study at a university in their respective areas of study to continue their education. The scholarships are granted for tuition, maintenance and travel. The candidates are of the highest caliber and have varying fields of interest: Law, Finance, Journalism, Education and the Arts. The Macmillan Scholarship The Agnes and Margaret Macmillan Scholarship is made possible through a grant from the estate of the Society’s first female member, Margaret ‘Peggy Macmillan’. In 2006, Peggy began support of the Scholarship Fund through annual donations made in the memory of her departed sister Agnes. In the ensuing years, Peggy contributed significantly to the fund to establish the Macmillan - St. Andrew's Society Scholarship. Sadly, she passed away in April 2013. In her continued generosity, Peggy thoughtfully remembered the Society in her estate planning; guaranteeing The Macmillan Scholarship in perpetuity. It is now aptly renamed The Agnes and Margaret Macmillan-St. Andrew's Society Scholarship.
