Programming Fellowship

Overview: A paid, seven-month fellowship (April–August) designed for Greater New Orleans-based aspiring film programmers to build skills and experience related to film programming and curation through one season of film review and selection for the New Orleans Film Festival.

Geographic Scope: Greater New Orleans area

Award Details:

  • Stipend: $1,500

  • Additional benefit: Complimentary pass to the New Orleans Film Festival

  • Time commitment: Flexible weekly schedule with hybrid aspect, averaging 5-10 hours per week

  • Festival attendance: Expected
  • Focus Areas:

  • Film programming and curation

  • Filmmaker-submitted project review and selection

  • Industry networking and exposure to programming approaches
  • Fellowship Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the review process of filmmaker-submitted projects, including viewing submissions, completing assessments, and participating in programmer discussions

  • Meeting with programmers and industry leaders from film institutions to learn about programming approaches and curatorial practices

  • Taking an active role as part of a fellowship cohort, meeting regularly to discuss screening progress

  • Writing program and promotional copy for films as required

  • Attending the New Orleans Film Festival to introduce films/filmmakers and moderate Q&A sessions (virtually and in-person)

  • Completing a post-festival survey
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Based in Greater New Orleans area

  • No prior film programming experience required

  • Encouraged applicants: BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ individuals, members of the disability community

  • Willingness to commit minimum 5 hours weekly from April through July watching films and discussing with screener group

  • Ability to describe and support assessment of submissions

  • Strict adherence to confidentiality guidelines

  • Ability to watch each film assigned in its entirety without skimming

  • Commitment to watch and rate films in timely manner

  • Open-minded, generally positive approach to film and respect for filmmaker commitment and vision

  • Eagerness to diversify stories at NOFF (new filmmakers, women, people of color, LGBTQ+ community)

  • No involvement in submitted films: No financial or production involvement, or close relationships with filmmakers/producing teams

  • Ability to analyze films with critical eye and offer insight on audience appeal
