Overview

Movement Fund 2026 Open Call

Funder: Native Movement

Purpose: This fund aims to increase access to capital for Indigenous artists and community developers in order to amplify liberatory, grassroots and Queer/BIPOC led initiatives. The 2026 Open Call Movement Fund seeks to redistribute single one-time grants to support movements for social justice, Indigenous rights, and the rights of Mother Earth through direct funding of grassroots, intergenerational, and collective leadership efforts.

Theme: Alaska Native Food Sovereignty - Food is our medicine. When we share Indigenous foodways, we are sharing culture, connecting with our ecosystems, and nourishing our bodies and our spirits.

    Funding Available

  • Total Pool: $200,000
  • Award Range: $1,000 - $25,000 per selected applicant (single one-time grants)
  • Tiered Funding Examples:
  • - Family grants: $1,000 - $5,000 (individual harvesting activities) - Collective efforts: $10,000 - $15,000 (community-minded projects promoting traditional foodways) - Organizational efforts: $15,000 - $20,000 (projects encouraging respectful and sustainable harvesting practices)

    Geographic Scope

  • Location: Alaska
  • Priority: Alaska Native led initiatives based full-time in Alaska

    Focus Areas

    Projects celebrating Alaska Native food sovereignty, including but not limited to:
  • Harvesting activities (seal processing, fish processing, clamming, moose hunting, seaweed harvesting, foraging)
  • Processing and preservation techniques
  • Documenting and sharing traditional recipes

    Priority Considerations

    Priority will be given to projects that:
  • Pass on foodways knowledge and skills to youth
  • Encourage respectful and sustainable harvesting practices
  • Build community connections and collaboration

    Eligibility

  • Applicant Type: Individual Alaska Native artists, artist collectives, or Alaska Native organizations
  • Age Requirement: At least 18 years of age
  • Residency: Based full-time in Alaska
  • Priority: Native Movement prioritizes applicants who have not yet been awarded an Open Call grant or affiliated with Native Movement previously
  • Note: Applicants with an open 2025 grant are not eligible to reapply until all previously funded projects have been closed out

    Selection Criteria

    Native Movement prioritizes working with individuals who:
  • Work towards maintaining healthy relationships and acting as good relatives across communities
  • Lead with a sense of generosity and responsibility
  • Look out for the greater good of the community
  • Background Check: Native Movement conducts a basic online background check to prioritize the safety of those they work with, especially youth

  • Application Period: March 9 - April 20, 2026
  • Selection Process: April 21 - May 7, 2026
  • Funding Release: June 2026 (late June, distributions not automatic and may take several weeks for processing)

    Required Materials & Information

  • Applicant information (name, age verification that applicant is at least 18 years old, Alaska Native identification)
  • Residency verification (proof of full-time residence in Alaska)
  • Project description aligned with Alaska Native Food Sovereignty theme
  • Specific funding tier requested ($1,000-$5,000, $10,000-$15,000, $15,000-$20,000, or other amounts up to $25,000)
  • Information demonstrating how project meets priority criteria (youth knowledge-passing, sustainable practices, community collaboration)

    Additional Notes

  • Basic online background check required as part of application process
  • Native Movement does not solicit applications for the broader Movement Fund (that is a closed referral process), but this 2026 Open Call actively invites applications
  • Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate commitment to Native Movement's values based on Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and Defend the Sacred AK Principles
