Overview

MHA Caregiver of the Year Award

Purpose: The Maine Hospital Association presents this award annually to recognize a caregiver from a member institution who demonstrates extraordinary commitment to the delivery of care to patients and their families on a daily basis.

Geographic Scope: Maine (MHA member institutions only)

Eligibility:

  • Any caregiver from an MHA member institution may be nominated

  • Award recipient must be able to attend the award ceremony on Wednesday, June 18 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine

  • Caregiver must have direct contact with patients and their families (not restricted to doctors/nurses—past winners include social workers, rehabilitation therapists, and directors of volunteer services)

  • Posthumous nominations are not accepted
  • Selection Criteria:
    Nominees should demonstrate:

  • Exemplary extraordinary commitment to patients on a daily basis

  • Compassion, empathy and respect in the delivery of care to patients and their families

  • Acknowledgment and meeting of unique physical, emotional and practical needs of patients and their families

  • Promotion of an environment of cooperation and collaboration in which the expertise and experience of all healthcare professionals are available to patients
  • Award Details:

  • Winner honored at Opening Banquet of MHA Summer Forum on Wednesday, June 18 at Samoset Resort in Rockport

  • Award presented and awardee given opportunity to speak to MHA members

  • Awardee invited to attend conference (ends Friday, June 20)

    Background: MHA has presented this award annually since 2002 (no awards given in 2012 for 75th Anniversary celebration, or 2020-2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic).

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Step 1: Submit Nomination

  • Complete the online nomination form at themha.org
  • Step 2: Required Materials
    1. Nominator's name and contact information
    2. Nominee's name, title, hospital affiliation, email, phone number, and address
    3. Essay of 500 words or less explaining why nominee meets the criteria
    4. At least two, and up to three specific examples of how the nominee has gone "above and beyond the call of duty" in demonstrating extraordinary commitment to patient care
    5. Optional: Supporting documentation such as awards, articles, letters, etc. (max file size 20MB)

    Step 3: Content Guidelines

  • Provide brief but thorough background on the nominee

  • Give specific examples showing why the person deserves the award

  • Describe how nominee goes out of their way to help patients

  • Include examples of special treatment of co-workers

  • Highlight any heroic or meaningful events

  • Mention any community/volunteer work outside the hospital

  • Entries that stand out describe various reasons why the nominee is an extraordinary caregiver

  • Professional writing skills are not essential—specific examples matter most
  • Who Can Nominate:

  • Anyone may nominate an employee of an MHA-member hospital

  • Patients may nominate if they can provide sufficient examples (may consult with co-workers)

  • Employees from practices or organizations affiliated with MHA member hospitals may be nominated if the practice/organization is owned or affiliated with an MHA member
  • Timeline:

  • Nominations deadline: Friday, April 25

  • Winner selected by: Wednesday, May 21

  • Award ceremony: Wednesday, June 18

  • Selection process: MHA staff narrow nominations to one per hospital; final decision made by committee
