Legal Fellowships

Funder: Justice at Work Inc (Boston, MA)

Overview: Justice at Work seeks third-year law students or recent law school graduates interested in applying for public interest fellowships that generally begin each fall. These fellowships include Skadden, Equal Justice Works, Justice Catalyst, and other independently funded programs.

Geographic Scope: Fellows must be Boston-based. Work throughout Massachusetts.

  • Immigration law (labor-based)

  • Worker rights and organizing support

  • Public interest law
  • Eligible Applicants:

  • Third-year law students

  • Recent law school graduates

  • Demonstrated record of public service

  • Willingness to apply for public interest law fellowships

  • Must be licensed (or intending to sit) for Massachusetts state bar

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice

  • Strong preference for candidates who speak another language

  • Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills

  • Ability to think strategically and communicate effectively

  • Ability to work collaboratively with community educators and organizers
  • Salary & Benefits:

  • Base Salary: Justice at Work will make up any difference between the fellowship's base salary and entry level attorney position of $60,000

  • Health Insurance: 80% family health care, 100% dental, vision, and life insurance (effective upon hiring)

  • Retirement: Up to 4% employer 401(k) contribution

  • Time Off: Paid vacation, wellness, personal time, and parental leave; 13 paid holidays; one-week end-of-year closure

  • Professional Development: $1,500 annual allowance

  • Schedule: Hybrid scheduling (expectation of two days per week in office); occasional evening/weekend work and travel throughout state
  • Fellow Responsibilities:

  • Performing legal intakes (in-person and phone) of worker grievances related to workplace abuses

  • Providing advice, referral, and/or representation for workers

  • Drafting, filing, and litigating complaints with government agencies and in court

  • Researching employment, labor, and immigration law

  • Counseling groups of workers and their organizations

  • Performing policy advocacy with government labor agencies and legislative bodies

  • Training worker center members and staff on workplace-related laws (including evenings and Saturdays)

    Project Proposals:
    While Justice at Work recognizes that the best project proposals involve a coordinated process between the potential fellow and the organization, candidates should come prepared with at least a basic project proposal.
