James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry

Award Type: Recognition and honorarium for outstanding chemistry teachers

Amount: $3,000 honorarium plus certificate

Geographic Scope: International nominations accepted; presented by Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society

Focus Areas:

  • Outstanding teaching of chemistry at any level (secondary school, college, graduate school)

  • Teaching effectiveness and distinction

  • Wide-ranging impact on chemical education

  • May include contributions through textbooks, journal articles, or professional activity at local, national, and international levels
  • History: Established in 1950 by NESACS to honor the memory of James Flack Norris (1871-1940), professor of chemistry at Simmons College and M.I.T., chair of NESACS in 1904, and ACS President in 1925-26. First award presented in 1951.

    Eligibility:

  • Individuals or teams of individuals may be nominated

  • Must be teachers of chemistry at any level

  • Nominees should have served with special distinction

  • International list of nominees considered
  • Presentation: Ceremony and dinner in November; includes formal address by awardee

    Submission Format: Electronic submission in Adobe PDF format

    Required Materials:
    1. Primary nomination letter (focus on candidate's contributions to and effectiveness in teaching chemistry)
    2. Curriculum vitae
    3. Supporting/seconding letters (optional but encouraged) - should show impact of nominee's teaching on colleagues and students, influence on chemical education activities

    Page Limit: Maximum 30 pages for individual nominations

    What NOT to Include: Reprints or other publications should NOT be included

    Selection Criteria:

  • Excellence in teaching practice

  • Contributions to chemical education (textbooks, journal articles, professional activities)

  • Mentoring of graduate students and postdocs

  • Wide-ranging effect on chemical education
  • Notification: Applicants will be notified of results by email, with written confirmation to follow
