Overview

J.L. Tillman Endowed Scholarship

Overview: The NAAIA J. L. Tillman Scholarship was created to promote higher educational opportunities for African-American students interested in careers within the insurance industry. Consistent with the ideals of NAAIA's Founder, Jerald L. Tillman, the Scholarship Fund encourages more African Americans to strongly consider careers within the insurance industry.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicant must be an African-American 2. Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen 3. Applicant must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA 4. Applicant must be a graduating High School Senior who is college bound in the summer or fall, or a full-time college student (four-year college program, Junior College, or Community College Student) 5. Preferred degrees include: Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Math, Actuarial Science, Computer Technology, Marketing, an associated field of study or be interested in pursuing a career in the insurance industry 6. If applicant is a graduating High School Senior, applicant must show a school acceptance letter and acceptable proof of commitment to attend a specific school

5. Essays (Two required essays, double-spaced, limited to 2 pages each, no more than 500 words per essay)
- Essay 1: Describe how the threat of a Cyber related issue or an actual event impacted your perspective relative to the value of insurance
- Essay 2: Describe how insurance may offer a career track option for you based upon your aspirations
- Format: PDF or DOC; max 10 MB each

6. Letters of Recommendation
- Three letters required:
- Two letters from teachers or counselors
- One letter from a community leader (minister, mentor, employer, etc.)
- Format: PDF or DOC; max 10 MB each
- Can be uploaded directly or emailed to info@naaia.org
- Must be received by deadline

7. Transcripts
- Most recent high school or college transcript
- Format: PDF or DOC; max 10 MB

- Must be received by deadline

8. Standardized Test Scores
- For high school students/graduates enrolling in college: ACT score of 23 or higher OR SAT combined score of 1200 or higher (documentation required)
- Not required if already attending college

9. College Acceptance Letter
- Copy of college acceptance letter
