Overview

Fundamentals of Genomics Course

Overview: Entry-level course introducing the essentials of genetic/genomics across the lifespan. This is foundational training for understanding and incorporating clinical genetics/genomics into practice.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 13 weeks

  • Credits: 52 CNE credits, including 2.5 pharmacology credits

  • Delivery: Can be completed completely remotely, making it available internationally

  • Format: Asynchronous (literature and video review) with synchronous participation requirement of 1.5 hours weekly for 13 weeks

  • Focus: Multidisciplinary approach to care with thorough understanding of cellular and molecular basis of genetics
  • Course Objectives:

  • Develop clinical competency in essentials of genetics/genomics

  • Discuss models for integrating genetics into practice

  • Acquire genetic screening and genetic test interpretation skills

  • Discuss genetic syndromes, diagnosis, and integration of surveillance strategies

  • Introduce genetics/genomics evidence-based guideline recommendations

  • Learn techniques to increase population-based screening

  • Identify ways of improving community health outcomes while decreasing genetic service disparities

  • Participate in collaborative learning

  • Prepare participants to be members of a genetics team

  • Provide continuing education credits for re-certification (RN, NP, PA)
  • Curriculum Content:

  • Prenatal, preconception, and pediatric genetic conditions

  • Adult genetic conditions

  • Drug metabolism problems
  • Eligibility:

  • External and internal applicants welcome

  • BSN-prepared nurses currently working in or planning to start a role in genetics

  • NPs and PAs interested in learning about genetics

  • All disciplines of medicine outside of medical genetics fellowship
  • Unique Features:

  • First course of its kind providing general training across all medical disciplines outside medical genetics fellowship

  • Allows providers to obtain advanced genetics training without leaving the community

  • No need to complete formal graduate or doctoral program

  • High-level genetics training applicable across the lifespan and daily practice
  • Accreditation: Approved as provider of nursing continuing professional development by Montana Nurses Association, accredited approver with distinction by American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation
