Family Physician of the Year Award

Geographic Scope: Wisconsin

Award Recognition: Annual recognition of a physician exemplifying the tradition of the "Family Doctor"

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Provides community with compassion, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continual basis

  • Directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance quality of life

  • Provides credible and amiable role model as a healer and human being to community, and as professional in science and art of medicine to colleagues, other health professionals, young physicians in training, and medical students

  • Demonstrates balance between career and family

  • Member in good standing of the Academy

    • Eligibility:

  • Must be WAFP member in good standing

  • Past winners cannot be re-nominated for same award but may be nominated for another WAFP award

  • Current Board of Directors members may not be considered for WAFP awards while on Board; eligible for consideration after Board term completion

    • Recognition:

  • Honored at WAFP Annual Business Meeting on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee

  • May be nominated for American Academy of Family Physicians National Family Physician of the Year award

    • How to Apply

    Nomination Process

    1. Who Can Nominate: Patients and others who know the physician's work
    2. Submission Method: Send letter of nomination to Wisconsin Academy describing why their family physician should receive the award
    3. Nomination Deadline: July 1 (annual)
    4. Content: Letter should highlight excellent services provided by the family physician
    5. Selection: Individuals evaluated based on stated criteria by Academy selection committee

      Required Information:

    • Nominee name and WAFP membership status
    • Nominator name and relationship to nominee
    • Detailed explanation of how nominee meets evaluation criteria
    • Description of nominee's contributions to community and patient care
