Overview: A long-standing scholarship program begun in the 1980s and awarded annually. The program is directed toward deserving young people pursuing health care careers and is named to honor the vision and spirit of Emily Lee, wife of Dr. John K. Lee (after whom Lee Hospital was named).

Historical Background

Emily Lee bequeathed money from her estate to be used toward founding a homeopathic hospital in her husband's name. Dr. John K. Lee was a native of Pittsburgh who served in the Civil War, graduated from Hahnemann Medical School, and came to Johnstown to practice medicine. Dr. Lee died during the Johnstown flood of 1889.

Eligibility Requirements

• Healthcare-related major: All applicants must be pursuing a healthcare-related major
• Academic excellence: Demonstrated through academic record
• Financial need: Considered in selection
• Volunteer involvement: Community service and volunteer work considered
• Target applicants:
- Graduating high school seniors - Currently enrolled post-secondary students - Students in post-secondary technology certification programs or degree programs - Students in advanced semesters of study - Those pursuing second careers in healthcare

Open to the community; serves the former Lee Hospital service area in western Pennsylvania
