Overview

Children's Ski Scholarship Program

Overview: Stark Mountain Foundation provides local children with scholarships for ski instruction at Mad River Glen. The program pays for ski instruction, rental equipment, lift passes, and lunch.

Geographic Scope: Harwood Union School District (Vermont)

Focus Areas:

  • Ski instruction and equipment access for elementary school children

  • Building opportunities for future stewards of Stark Mountain

  • Removing financial barriers to outdoor recreation and skiing

    • Award Details:

  • New incoming scholarship athletes: 3-6 awarded annually

  • Returning athletes: Up to 15 supported annually

  • Awarded recipients who successfully complete the program are eligible to apply for scholarships in subsequent years

    • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Athletes must be 4-12 years old as of January 1st, 2026

  • Must attend elementary school within Harwood Union School District or reside in district as homeschooled students

  • Parent(s) or guardian(s) must complete application and sign release/waiver of liability

  • Athlete and parent(s)/guardian(s) must commit to attending at least 8 of 12 weekly sessions

  • Parent(s)/guardian(s) must provide or arrange transportation to/from Mad River Glen

  • Seasonal programs typically run last weekend in December through mid-March

    • Priority Criteria for Financial Aid & Merit:

  • Athletes demonstrating genuine interest and excitement for learning to ski

  • Athletes unlikely to have access to skiing without financial assistance

  • Athletes ages 4-7 entering the program

  • Returning athletes who successfully completed prior year

  • Athletes with demonstrable financial need (VT Free & Reduced Meals, SNAP, Dr. Dynasaur, Medicaid, SSI, Foster Care, WIC, etc.)

  • Families experiencing extenuating financial circumstances (single-parent households, adoptive/foster families, children in college, significant healthcare costs, large households, divorce/separation impacts)

  • Athletes with reference confirming age-appropriate behavior in outdoor group learning environment

    • Background: Program established in 2021 by friends from Mad River racing team to honor the memory of Terry Harris. Also honors Paul Berzatzy, legendary Mad River Glen ski instructor of 42 years.

    Application Process

    Status: Applications for 2025/2026 season have closed. Applications will open in April 2026 for the 2026/2027 season.

    Deadlines:

  • Returning Athletes/Siblings of Returning Athletes: April 26th (annually)

    • - Recipients notified by May 31st
  • New Athletes: November 9th (annually)

    • - Recipients notified by December 1st

    Required Materials:
    1. Completed application form
    2. Signed release and waiver of liability (parent/guardian)
    3. Proof of age (athlete must be 4-12 years old as of January 1st)
    4. Proof of enrollment/residence in Harwood Union School District
    5. Documentation of financial need (if applicable): VT Free & Reduced Meals, SNAP, Dr. Dynasaur, Medicaid, SSI, Foster Care, WIC, or other documentation of financial circumstances
    6. Reference confirming age-appropriate behavior in outdoor group learning environment (recommended)
