Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award

Overview: Valley United Way's oldest and most prestigious award for community service, established to honor the legacy of Charles H. Flynn, founder of Valley United Way.

Award Background:

  • Named for Charles H. Flynn, who was editor of The Evening Sentinel newspaper

  • Flynn was one of the founders of the Valley United Fund

  • Was president of the Ansonia Community Chest

  • In 1968, led the merger of the Ansonia Community Chest with the Derby-Shelton Community Chest and the Seymour United Fund, resulting in the formation of Valley United Way
  • Award History:

  • First presented in 1971 to Alice Russ Cochran of Shelton

  • Presented annually since 1971

  • As of 2017, 47 recipients have been honored
  • Eligibility Criteria:

  • Restricted to living persons only

  • Service must encompass more than one town

  • Service must involve more than one organization

  • Award is for a single individual (not organizations or groups)

  • Recognizes lifetime service to the Valley community
  • Geographic Scope: Lower Naugatuck Valley (five towns: Shelton, Ansonia, Seymour, Derby, Oxford)
