Background: Beatrice Arthur (1922-2009) was a legendary actress known for roles in "All in the Family," "Maude," and "The Golden Girls." She was a committed animal advocate who bequeathed funds to IDA to create this annual award honoring organizations that exemplify compassion for animals.

First Recipient: C.A.R.E. (Cat & Canine Assistance, Referral and Education) Sanctuary in the Antelope Valley near Palmdale, California - a no-kill, cage-free sanctuary caring for over 200 abused, abandoned, handicapped and elderly dogs and cats.
