Art + Technology Lab Grant

Funder: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

Overview:
The Art + Technology Lab at LACMA is a "safe-to-fail" rapid prototyping environment where visionary artists are empowered to test bold ideas, prototype the future, and share their discoveries with the world. The program supports projects that explore artistic applications of new tools and ideas related to technology and culture.

Geographic Scope: Open to individuals and collectives located anywhere in the world

Award Structure:

  • 3-5 projects selected through open call

  • Up to 2 invitational projects supplementing open call selections

  • Typical project duration: 2 years

  • Financial support: Up to $50,000 per project

  • In-kind support available: mentorship, coaching, advice, exposure to technologies from partner organizations
  • Partner Organizations:
    Include Hyundai Motor Company, Snap Inc., Anthropic, MIT Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and others

    Areas of Interest:

  • Exploratory ideas with room for refinement in collaboration with technologists

  • Projects with public accessibility and consistent with LACMA's mission

  • Projects producing models, prototypes, data, code, or material that can be shared broadly

  • Proposals utilizing museum resources (data, archives, collection access, digital platforms)

  • Projects with public demonstration or audience engagement

  • Emerging technology exploration (prior technological experience not required)

  • Projects presented beyond traditional gallery settings, including virtual, online, and conceptual projects
  • Project Budget Components:

  • Artist fees and direct costs

  • Materials

  • Travel for public demonstration purposes
  • Expanded Structure (Beginning 2026):

  • New grant cycles every two years, forming artist cohorts

  • Biennial Symposium beginning in 2027 (mid-term demonstrations, performances, talks)

  • Biennial Demo Day beginning in 2028 (showcasing completed projects)
  • Evaluation Criteria:

  • Is the project artist-led with artistic merit?

  • Does the project explore emerging technology?

  • Does the project suggest models, methods, and/or data of interest to other artists and technologists?

  • Does the process include opportunities for public demos, prototypes, or collaborative opportunities during development?

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Deadline: April 22, 2026, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time

    Application Notification: All applicants will be notified by email of application status in July 2026

    Project Start Date: Can begin as early as fall 2026

    Required Application Materials

    LACMA is NOT looking for traditional proposals. Some degree of uncertainty and ambiguity is encouraged to identify projects that truly explore new frontiers in art and technology. Focus should be on the questions and methods to explore, and the process for exposing experimentation results to the public.

    Application must address the following:

    1. Name of your project

    2. Descriptive keywords - List three words that describe your proposal

    3. One-sentence description - Provide a one-sentence description of the work for which you are seeking support

    4. Full project description - 500-word maximum
    - Include principal artist/collective bio (may be in CV format)

    5. Artistic/creative merit - 100-word maximum
    - Describe the artistic or creative merit of the proposed project

    6. Technology and culture dialogue - 100-word maximum
    - In what ways does your project inspire dialogue about the relationship between technology and culture or other relevant issues?

    7. Public engagement plan - Describe your proposed plan for public engagement
    - What opportunities do you provide for the public to engage with your project during development?

    Award Process

    • LACMA staff and curators review all applications
    • Final selection made by museum director and curatorial/program staff
    • LACMA has sole discretion on number of proposals accepted and supported
    • May require meetings with applicants to discuss proposals and establish detailed agreements
    • Grants awarded only after definitive agreements reached
    • Amount and timing of fund disbursement determined by nature of each project

    Grant Agreement Requirements

    All artists must execute a definitive agreement with LACMA (and third-party participants where applicable) setting forth:

  • Scope and duration of project

  • Required milestones

  • Amount and timing of funding

  • Involvement of third parties

  • Intellectual property

  • Licensing

  • Ownership

  • Other relevant matters
  • Budget Requirements

    • All costs included in project budget must be expended during period of support (typically within 24 months of initial award)
    • Applicants may include fees for their own time and/or creative effort as part of overall request
