Overview

Alice Barton Scholarship Program

Overview: The Alice Barton Scholarship Program helps empower domestic violence survivors through education and job training by providing annual scholarships to enable survivors to gain new knowledge and skills, increase self-confidence, access better employment opportunities, and achieve economic independence.

Background: Founded in 2012 in honor of domestic violence survivor Alice Barton by her three children: Roxanne Conlin (Iowa trial attorney and longtime ICADV supporter), Raymond Barton (founder and board chairman of Great Clips, Inc.), and Rhoda Olsen (Great Clips CEO). Since inception, scholarships have been awarded to 300 survivors.

Award Amount

Annual scholarships of $2,000 per survivor

    Eligible Uses

  • Tuition, books, and fees for classes
  • Other expenses supporting education and job training efforts, such as:
  • - Child care - Transportation

Geographic Scope

ONLY available to survivors residing in Iowa or attending an Iowa-accredited education platform. Applications from individuals not residing in Iowa and not attending an Iowa-accredited educational platform will not be considered.

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a survivor of domestic violence
  • Must reside in Iowa OR attend an Iowa-accredited educational platform
  • Priority given to:
  • - Survivors seeking their first college degree or technical job training - Survivors referred by a local domestic violence program
  • Survivors not fitting priority areas are still encouraged to apply
